Why Melissa Trinkl Sends Honeymooners to the Caribbean (And When She Doesn't)

The Caribbean is the world's most popular honeymoon destination for a reason — but it's not right for every couple. Here's how I think about it, what I actually recommend, and the questions I ask before booking anything.

Why Melissa Trinkl Sends Honeymooners to the Caribbean (And When She Doesn't)

When a newly engaged couple reaches out to me, the Caribbean comes up in the first five minutes of almost every conversation. And honestly? That makes complete sense. The images are everywhere — turquoise water, white sand, overwater bungalows, cocktails at sunset. It's the visual shorthand for "honeymoon."

But here's what I've learned after planning dozens of them: the Caribbean is the right answer for a lot of couples, and the wrong answer for some. My job is to figure out which one you are — and then build the trip accordingly.

Why the Caribbean Works So Well for Honeymoons

Let me start with what makes it genuinely excellent, because the reasons are real.

It's easy. No long-haul flights, no jet lag, no navigating a language barrier on your first week of marriage. You land, you're there. For couples who are already exhausted from wedding planning, that ease is not a small thing.

The resorts are purpose-built for romance. The Caribbean has some of the most refined all-inclusive and boutique resort experiences in the world. Properties like Sandals Royal Barbados, Jade Mountain in St. Lucia, and Rosewood Jumby Bay in Antigua have spent decades perfecting the honeymoon experience. Private plunge pools, butler service, sunset dinners on the beach — this is what they do.

The water is extraordinary. I've traveled a lot, and I'll say it plainly: the Caribbean has some of the most beautiful water on earth. The color, the clarity, the warmth. If your honeymoon vision involves snorkeling, sailing, or simply floating in something that looks like a screensaver, the Caribbean delivers.

It's flexible. Two weeks in Bali requires more planning and more recovery time. A week in Turks and Caicos or St. Lucia is a complete, satisfying trip. For couples with limited time off, that matters.

My Favorite Caribbean Honeymoon Destinations Right Now

Not all Caribbean islands are the same, and matching the right island to the right couple is one of my favorite parts of this work.

St. Lucia — This is my most-recommended Caribbean honeymoon destination, full stop. The Piton mountains rising out of the sea, the lush rainforest, the boutique luxury properties — it has a drama and intimacy that most other islands don't. Jade Mountain is one of the most spectacular resorts I've ever seen, with open-wall suites that frame the Pitons like a living painting. Anse Chastanet next door is equally beautiful and more adventurous. St. Lucia is for couples who want romance with a sense of place.

Turks and Caicos — If the vision is pure beach perfection, TCI is hard to beat. Grace Bay consistently ranks among the world's best beaches, and the resort options — COMO Parrot Cay, Amanyara, The Shore Club — are exceptional. It's quieter and more refined than some of the busier islands, which suits couples who want to genuinely unplug.

Antigua — 365 beaches, one for every day of the year (so they say). Antigua has a classic, unhurried Caribbean feel with some excellent boutique properties. Rosewood Jumby Bay is on a private island just off the coast and is one of the most serene resort experiences I've ever booked for clients.

Barbados — More sophisticated and culturally rich than many people expect. The food scene is excellent, the west coast beaches are calm and beautiful, and the mix of all-inclusive and independent hotel options gives couples more flexibility. Sandy Lane is iconic for a reason.

Mexico's Riviera Maya — Technically not the Caribbean, but close enough in spirit and often in the same conversation. Tulum has become a serious luxury destination with a bohemian edge that appeals to a certain kind of couple. The cenotes, the Mayan ruins, the design-forward hotels — it's a different vibe than a traditional Caribbean resort, and I love it for the right people.

When I Steer Couples Away from the Caribbean

Here's where I'll be honest with you, because I think it's more useful than just telling you what you want to hear.

If you've already been. A lot of couples have done a Caribbean vacation before — sometimes multiple times. If that's you, your honeymoon is a great opportunity to go somewhere you've never been. Europe, Southeast Asia, the Maldives, East Africa — these are trips that feel genuinely transformative in a way that a return trip to an island you already know might not.

If you want cultural immersion. The Caribbean is beautiful, but if you're someone who wants to come home with a deeper understanding of a place — its history, its food traditions, its people — there are destinations that offer more of that. Japan, Morocco, Portugal, Peru. The Caribbean is wonderful for rest and beauty; it's not primarily a destination for cultural depth.

If you're adventure-driven. If your idea of a perfect honeymoon involves hiking, wildlife, off-the-beaten-path exploration — the Caribbean can do some of that, but destinations like Costa Rica, New Zealand, or Patagonia are going to give you more.

If you want the Maldives experience but think the Caribbean is "close enough." They're not the same. The Maldives overwater bungalow experience — the Indian Ocean, the marine life, the total isolation — is genuinely different from anything in the Caribbean. If that's the specific dream, I'll book you the Maldives.

What I Ask Every Honeymoon Couple Before I Book Anything

Before I recommend a single destination, I ask:

  1. What does your ideal day look like? Beach and pool? Exploring a town? Hiking? Spa? The answer shapes everything.
  2. How much time do you have? A week and two weeks are very different trips.
  3. Have you been to the Caribbean before? If yes, what did you love and what felt missing?
  4. What's your relationship with all-inclusives? Some couples love the ease; others feel trapped. Both are valid.
  5. What's the one thing this trip absolutely has to have? A private pool? A specific type of water? A particular level of seclusion? I want to know the non-negotiable.

The answers to those five questions tell me almost everything I need to know.

Let's Plan Yours

Your honeymoon is one trip where I'd argue it's genuinely worth having someone in your corner who knows these properties, has relationships with the hotels, and can make sure everything is exactly right. That's what I do.

Whether the Caribbean is the answer or somewhere else entirely — I'll help you figure it out.
